Google intends to change its playstore algorithm to account for quality and performance

by Tennyson MuchokiAugust 7, 2017

Google has announced that apps which frequently crash, eat up excess battery and render slowly will find themselves much lower in the playstore search despite their popularity

  • This change is an indication of overall shift in search ranking priority criteria that commenced years back with Google’s Panda Alogarithm

QUALITY IS VITAL

The performance of a mobile app is equally important as quality therefore the above will be the dominating factor in search result ranking.

Google has been factoring it since 2011 when it released panda.

This move has been seconded by FACEBOOK.Facebook  CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a blog that they have included changes in their News Feed system that will detect and downrank slow loading pages.

In my opinion this is a great move and will be of great importance to the users as it will improve speed of facebook app.The changes are going to reflect soon.

Until this updates, search results in the playstore will prioritize popularity over support. This way playstore will acount for crashes, render times, battery usage and the number of uninstalls when presenting search results and ranking popular apps.

Google has released the updates  to a small subset of its playstore users this past week and google says that they have seen a difference in user retention.

High quality apps that are being filtered to the top are used more and unistalled less

How does this affect the app developers?

Highly ranked app developers shouldnt be scared however those highly ranked but have poor quality have alot to fear

If an app is popular despite flaws, it is likely to become more popular and with a better ranking in the search result

What should developers do…..

Google advices app developers to consult the Android Vitals Dashboard in the google play store console. It displays the statistics on performance issues and other app flaws that may be causing downranking

SECONDLY….

Developers should pay close attention to low rated reviews and take them seriously. If a user goes out of his way to report a quality issue they are propably not the only ones facing it

Ratings are excellent place to discover app problems not caught in the android Vitals Dashboard

LASTLY…

PLAY BOOK APP

How to succeed in app development guide courtesy of google

It is regulary updated with info on late changes and best practises. It is available for free on google play store. You can download it if you need to know apps performance. The added weight of quality comparission to popularity is not going to fade soon instead it will become prominent on many platforms

  • It is the highest time for  app developers to wake up and up their game to match the newly set standards
